Our Processes
Nerikomi
Nerikomi is the layering and rearranging of multiple clays which are cut and reassembled to make a pattern that goes beyond the surface of the piece. The patterns give a clue as to how the piece was created.
Wheel
Our tableware is made from single types of clay such as stoneware or porcelain. Have a design in mind? Let's commission a custom set to your specifications! We always glaze with non-toxic food-safe glazes and our pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.
Inlay
Inlays are made by pressing contrasting clays into a slab before shaping.
Slip Casting
For shapes we really love, we create plaster molds that we pour liquid clay into and copy them. These are typically made from clay we recycle and reformulate for slip-casting. Slip-casting clay starts as really thick clay and is mixed with a water-reducing agent to make it into a pourable slurry.
Agateware
We minimize waste by using trimmings from our nerikomi pieces. We make it into a ball and throw a piece on the wheel. There's something unpredictable and continuously intriguing about making these one-of-a-kind pieces.
